The jury's review
Jury review of hjkl
A terminal-inspired educational web app that teaches Vim commands through keyboard-navigated micro-challenges set in a clean CRT-green grid.
hjkl is a focused, browser-based trainer designed to build Vim muscle memory without setup or friction. Visually, it commits wholeheartedly to the hacker terminal aesthetic, employing a crisp monospaced font, glowing mint-green accents on pitch-black, and sharp tabular borders. The interaction model is especially clever: even the initial menu is navigable using standard Vim hjkl motions and keyboard modifiers, reinforcing the tool's core premise before the user enters a challenge. While it is intentionally austere and strictly tailored for desktop keyboards, the cohesion between utility, graphic language, and interaction design makes it an exemplary piece of developer tooling.
What the jury loved
- Commitment to the terminal aesthetic through coherent green-on-black monospaced styling.
- Clever meta-interaction allowing the setup screen itself to be driven entirely via Vim keys.
- Clear instructional hierarchy displaying specific key combinations on each lesson card.
