The jury's review
Jury review of Manly: The Locals' Guide
A richly editorial, curated local guide to Manly, Sydney, combining stylized illustrated hero scenes with comprehensive cultural programming.
Manly: The Locals' Guide approaches travel and neighbourhood publishing with serious editorial focus. Fraunces brings an engaging warmth and literary rhythm to headlines, harmonising effectively with the warm coastal palette and structured editorial layout. The curation of weekend itineraries, festival calendars, and ferry transit details provides immediate utility. However, the heavy reliance on hyper-rendered digital illustrations rather than authentic local photography strips some genuine grit and authenticity from what is otherwise marketed as an insider's handbook. Tightening server performance and bringing real documentary imagery into the visual language would elevate this project considerably.
What the jury loved
- Expressive headline typography using Fraunces creates an inviting, upscale editorial tone
- Impeccable semantic structure with full landmarking and complete image alt attributes
- Clear, goal-driven hero CTAs facilitating both itinerary building and transit planning
